Plant Sciences Major
No matter what your background or experience has been, if you desire to learn more about plants and their role in our environment and our lives --- then this is the college major for you. It is botany on steroids.
A foundation of plant science knowledge leads to hands on applications in our cropping fields and laboratories that lead to understanding plant responses to environmental changes. These educational experiences open doors for you to work on:
- innovations in sustainable plant growth
- developing solutions to mitigating impacts of climate change
- protecting our food supply
- creating healthy, resource-friendly landscapes

Cal Poly has the motto "Learn by doing". It got that motto from our classes that were started over 100 years ago and we continue with that tradition to this day. This learning approach allows you to perform at a high level right from the start and eventually with work-related experience, develop your leadership skills.
One thing our graduates soon learn after leaving Cal Poly is that employers know they can count on Cal Poly grads to get the job done. There is a network of alumni working in all sectors and at all levels in Plant Sciences careers. This includes major companies large and small, independent businesses, the public sector, research and education.
